Make 2019 the year YOU write and sell your first book.

In today’s world where many of us aspire to be best-selling authors and novelists and it seems to be harder than ever to find an agent and bag a deal with a publishing house, there are other ways to get your work out there.

Digital publishing has opened up exceptional opportunities for authors and although it seems a daunting prospect, don’t despair. We’ve all heard the success stories about self-published authors whose books have become million sellers and were then offered mainstream deals by one of the top publishing houses.

There are a handful of writers who have become millionaires through self-publishing, but they are definitely in the minority. The most famous of these is E. L. James, the author of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. Originally posted on her own website and then as fan fiction of the vampire series Twilight, she went on to self-publish her first book as an e-book and print on demand paperback through a virtual publisher.

So where do you start? Planning is essential. Fail to plan, plan to fail. Once you have that idea for a plot and have your plan, then the first thing may sound obvious but… write! Transform your idea into prose and dialogue. Getting that first draft down is so important and then the hard work begins with the editing and polishing. The writing process is not a hobby, it is a job.

There is a plethora of information out there on how to write a book, but one of the best ways to get started and build up confidence is by joining a writers group where you can benefit from mutual support and constructive criticism. Sotogrande Writing Club is a local group meeting once a month in Southern Spain with a comprehensive website full of hints, tips and useful information about writing and self-publishing.

On the 26th January 2019 BC Training is holding a one-day course ‘Writing, Publishing and Selling Your First Book’ presented by John W. Hayes, author of four books including Why Authors, Bloggers, Journalists and Writers Need to Think Like Rock Stars and Becoming THE Expert. It will look at the writing process, examine publishing and distribution options and highlight potential opportunities and pitfalls.
